| Private sector employment in the Rochester
metropolitan area declined 3,800, or 0.9 percent, over the year to
436,400 in June 2008. Employment gains occurred in educational and
health services (+2,800). Declines were widespread affecting
manufacturing (-3,000), trade, transportation and utilities
(-1,100), professional and business services (-1,000), leisure and
hospitality (-600), construction (-400), other services (-300) and
financial activities (-200). Government employment (+700) rose over
